Semantic Markup

Google and other search engines are now relying on semantic markup to help them identify specific things on web pages and to authenticate information on those web pages so that they can deliver highly-relevant results to users.

Tailoring your site’s meta data is crucial to its success in search engines like Google, Bing, and even Yahoo, and utilizing semantic markup (like the markup found on Schema.org) not only improves the display of search results, but it makes it much easier for users to find desired web pages while improving your site’s position in search engine results pages (SERPs).  In the past, search engines relied heavily on “keyword strings” to help them organize and display what they thought were relevant results.

What is Markup?

With structured markup like Schema.org, descriptions on individual web pages are unique and very detailed and they help search engines find precisely what users are searching for.  This type of markup enables search engines to better understand the information on web pages and provide enhanced search results in order to make it easier for users to find relevant information on the web.

The ultimate goal of implementing schema.org markup on a website is ti be awards a “Rich Snippet” from Google.  Rich Snippets also help customers determine the value of a site before they click on the link to that site, and adding markup like schema.org to a site’s page has also shown higher click through rates as well.  Search engines understand information better on webpages with structured markup implemented properly and they provide enhanced search results, which in turn, make it easier for users to find more relevant information.  This also adds a little bit of “personality” to a search result and internet users are more likely to react and respond when they are presented with imagery, colors, ratings, reviews, etc.

You can see how the additional information (markup) helps Google to not only “verify” the content of the web page, but you can also see how that particular web page is ranking above/higher than the others that don’t contain markup information.

Using semantic markup like Schema.org is great from a business standpoint as well, as it also qualifies potential buyers.  Semantic search results like this help users find the answers they are looking for and narrows their search to specific products or services.
